Your body is a complex, dynamic chemistry set comprised of innumerable biochemicals constantly interacting with each other. Your metabolism is the totality of all of these interactions. Think of your metabolism as having two sides — a Building side and a Using side.

During your normal daily activity, through the Using side, you deplete your biochemicals. The role of the Building side is to restore all of the biochemicals you break down or use up each day. When Building keeps pace with Using, you have a Balanced metabolism. When Building does not keep pace with Using, you are in a state of metabolic Imbalance, which accelerates your aging process and causes the degenerative diseases that kill over 90% of people in the developed world.

Every aspect of your metabolism is regulated by hormones which determine whether you Build or Use. Hormones are the biochemicals that tell your cells what to do; as such, your hormones are the key to a balanced metabolism.

If hormones regulate every aspect of your metabolism, then what regulates hormones? The answer is your daily habits:

  • Nutrition – what, how, and when you eat
  • Sleep – the quantity and quality of your nightly sleep
  • Stress – your level of emotional and psychological stress and how you manage those stresses
  • Toxins – the degree to which you ingest or are exposed to foreign chemicals, and
  • Exercise – if and how you move your body on a regular basis

The Quest for Balance

While Using can and does happen under all circumstances, Building can only happen under limited circumstances – when your body is not substantially in Using mode. In the lifelong tug-of-war between Building and Using, by default, Using has a clear advantage. Over the years, as Using outpaces Building, your body breaks down and literally uses itself up. This process is what drives aging and leads to degenerative disease.

Your habits can either accelerate or slow your aging process by regulating which hormones are in play and in what amounts. By aligning your habits with the laws of human physiology, you support your body’s Building processes so that they can better keep pace with Using.

The Schwarzbein Programs

Years ago, based on experience with my patients, I developed a program that enables people to maximize Building and optimize Using by aligning their habits with the laws of physiology. That program also emphasizes appropriate hormone therapy in cases when the body can no longer produce the necessary amounts of a particular hormone. In my third (and most popular) Schwarzbein Principle book, titled The Program (2004), I presented the essential elements of my approach to regaining and maintaining metabolic health and provided a blueprint for following my approach.

Since then, just through my books, tens of thousands of people have followed my program successfully. Over the last 15 years I have continued to refine my approach in response to new scientific research. I have also developed even more effective methods to help and support people on their journey back to health. Even so, I have not changed the core elements of my approach, which are rooted in the biochemical laws that regulate how the body works. In the world of biochemistry, the truth is not subject to change based on popular opinion or the latest health fad. The truth is constant.

Most recently, I have been working on ways to use the Internet to go far beyond what can be accomplished with just a book. This website is a product of that work. Soon I will be offering two programs — the Stay Healthy Program and the Get Healthy Program that are specifically tailored to each person’s current metabolic profile whether Healthy, At Risk, Compromised, or Damaged.

  • Schwarzbein Stay Healthy Program — designed for those with a Healthy or At Risk metabolism. We will identify which of your habits are undermining your metabolism and show you how to change those habits to stay healthy as you age.
  • Schwarzbein Get Healthy Program — helps people with a Compromised metabolism to heal their metabolism and helps those with a Damaged Metabolism to slow their downward progression and, in most cases, reverse some of the damage.

These two Schwarzbein Programs give you everything you need to improve and protect your health. No need to try to piece it together and figure it out on your own or reconcile conflicting opinions about what to do or how to do it.

  • Second, the Schwarzbein Programs are not a fad. Over more than two decades, thousands of people have successfully regained and maintained their health by following my original program.
  • Third, the Programs focus on sustainable results, not quick fixes. If your metabolism is Compromised or Damaged, it simply cannot be “fixed” in a matter of a few weeks or months. That’s just not how the body works. “Crash” and “Boot Camp” programs will only further harm your metabolism. I can’t begin to count the number of patients who have come to me over the years to help them recover from one or more of these quick-fix programs.
  • Fourth, the Schwarzbein Programs address causes versus symptoms. Simply treating the symptoms of a problem does not solve the underlying problem. In fact, it makes it worse because it hides the warning signs that something is wrong.
  • Fifth, The Programs take a 360-degree view. Your body is an intricate system of interrelated and interdependent systems. Everything affects everything else. You can’t just focus on feeling tired, being overweight, having irregular digestion, or your cardiac health without considering every other aspect of your physiology.

  • Seventh, The Schwarzbein Programs are specifically tailored to your age and the current condition of your metabolism. These are not one-size-fits-all programs. That's not how the human body works. ​The program I use for a patient with an At-Risk metabolism would not help and, in fact, would further harm someone with a Damaged metabolism, and vice versa.
  • Eighth, The Schwarzbein Programs are “step-wise” programs. There is a method and an order to what I do to help my patients. I developed my process years ago by seeing what worked and what didn’t. Particularly for people with a Compromised or Damaged metabolism, the process is important. You have to crawl before you can walk or run. Small, patient steps taken in the correct order will get you where you want to be and where you want to stay. Jumping in with both feet will not.
  • Ninth, the Programs are easy to understand and follow. My programs don’t require that you do anything extreme or even unusual. No calorie counting or over-exercising. My programs are rooted in common sense and a basic understanding of how your body functions.
  • Tenth, The Schwarzbein Programs are not for everyone. The marketing experts aren’t wrong. You sell products and programs by appealing to people’s emotions, to what they want. Some people just want a quick fix or a program that takes little or no time, effort, or discipline. Rather than being educated, they just want to be told what to do. If this sounds like you, then my programs may not be a good fit for you. However, if your metabolism is already in trouble, fixing it will only get harder and take longer. It will never be easier to turn things around that it is today.

To a point, the body is very resilient and forgiving. Unless you have a truly damaged metabolism, you can restore metabolic balance. Your body can heal itself. Even if your metabolism is already damaged, by changing your habits over time, you can improve metabolic function and slow an already accelerated aging process.
